Where To Start with Metal and More

The Process of Steel Fabrication.

Metal fabrication is usually very common in industries that involve manufacturing as well as construction. During metal fabrication, raw materials are simply converted into processed products that are utilized in construction of bridges, machines as well as buildings. Structural steel is one of the metals that is widely used during fabrication since it is flexible, durable, tensile as well as affordable. There are various fabrication processes involved in the making of steel sections during steel fabrication. Some of these processes include cutting, folding, machining, punching, shearing, stamping as well as welding. The first stage of the fabrication process is cutting. During cutting, steel is cut into smaller pieces using a saw, plasma torch, a water jet as well as lasers. Chiseling, numerical control and shearing are other cutting techniques used during steel fabrication.

During folding, a process called press brake is used. Certain steel sections are made through bending or folding of steel. Folding helps to air-bend a sheet of metal into the desired form for ease of use. In order to form a crease on the metal sheet, the press brake used has a set of dies within it that pinch the steel metal forming the crease. The next process is machining whereby unwanted materials on the metal are removed in order for the designer to acquire a particular shape. One can either choose to rotate the metal against a cutting tool or use a rotating cutting tool on a stationary metal piece during machining.

During punching, a metal piece is punched by the use of a punch press in order to create a hole in it. In order for one to get the perfect hole shape, the die and punch need to be of the same shape. Shearing, also referred to as die cutting, is used in cutting straight lines onto a flat metal stock. Stamping on the other hand uses a die shaped in way in which a portion of the metal piece is raised. Welding involves two pieces of metal becoming attached in order to form a large structure or separate steel section. Metal designers use different techniques during welding which depend on the design of the metal structure and the metal itself.

Metal fabrication is very beneficial as it helps strengthen the quality of the metal. Better quality steel is more suitable for commercially designed buildings. Steel fabrication also comes in handy for use in energy sector projects. The metal products made through fabrication depend on the client’s specifications. Fabricated steel is preferred by most clients since it is cheaper unlike other alternatives. Structural steel fabrication is a very cost effective process which is why it is preferred by most clients.

There are various sectors that utilize structural steel such as transport, infrastructure, manufacturing as well as construction.
